The documentation for fileinfo@ suggests that arguments mtime and ctime are "redundant". When I check their values I seem to get meaningful answers: mdate is consistent with the modified date, and cdate is consistent with the created date. Is it safe to use these?

Yes you can now use these values. The documentation needs to be updated.
