Utility for Text File Comparison

19 Feb 2014 3:23 #13730

Can someone please recommend a good utility to compare text files for differences?

I have a series of sample input files and after editing the source and rebuilding the EXE, I run each sample input and check the output for unintentional changes versus the prior version. A compare utility would make the task much easier and more accurate.

Thank you.

A very good tool for file comparison is:

ExamDiff Pro

I use WinMerge. Plato has some limited file comparison functionality.

cmd.exe's FC provides a text comparison facility, as a text report summary. The best ones are graphical displays that split the screen and colour the differences. I use to use ED for Windows Ver 3.8 which used bold colours to highlight the differences and allowed editing and updating the difference display, but sadly it was a 16-bit program that I lost at Windows 7. There are newer utilities available, but all that I have seen miss the point of the comparison, which is you want to clearly see and step through where the changes are.

I use Beyond Compare and think it does the job really well.

Here is a screenshot showing changes in my old project.

ExamDiff Pro is working under Windows 7 and shows the differences between both files very clearly:

Same beauty and simplisity as above with Total Commander. Windows is not usable for me without it. I run 5 different color TC simultaneously (and could be even more when I switch to 4k monitors) which are doing many other useful things
