character sets

We are using the Salford compiler tools (FTN77 FTN95 C++ and WINIO).

In order to produce applications for use abroad we would like to work with foreign language character sets. Immediate needs are for Polish, Czech and Spanish.

Most important will be the use in WINIO dialogs and in the HTM Help called from WINIO.

Is there any chance to use 2-byte character presentation (Unicode(?)) or local language character sets with the existing tools or any new tools offered by you?

There is no direct support for UNICODE. One way forward might be to use ClearWin+ with %fn and to use a font that has the required characters in the non-ASCII range (e.g. Symbol has Greek characters and I have seen various Cyrillic fonts). Another might be to access the API function TextOutW together with MultiByteToWide but this would not be easy.

I forgot to mention that my comments relate to Win32. The .NET platform does provide enhanced support for UNICODE via its API. FTN95 currently only uses single byte characters for Fortran character variables but a .NET FTN95 program can use .NET strings. One approach may be to see what can be done using FTN95 and Visual ClearWin.
