SALFORD RUN-TIME LIBRARY Stack overflow

I'm an end user of Digital Terrain Modelling software (http://www.dtmsoftware.com/ ) that uses your Fortan compiler (salflibc.dll) and I'm trying to get help with an issue.

on one particular computer I am now getting on every file SALFORD RUN-TIME LIBRARY Stack overflow: Re-link with bigger stack value Stack:reserve.commit .will attempt to trace back

which I never had previously, I have tried their beta program which uses the latest salflibc.dll (2,849 kb 05/10/2009) software andf the problem persists. I have tried their variuyos suggestions (which seem very generic such as increasing virtual memory) without any success.

Is there something I could run directly against the library to check if I have some sort of DLL incompatibilities, or is there any additional debugging I could enable for the Salford library to track things down further.

Do you have the Fortran code? How big are the arrays? Can you control the array sizes for testing purposes? Can you use the Task Manager or some other utility to see how much memory is being used?

SLINK allows you to control the memory allocation but the starting point is knowing how much memory your program needs.

No, I have nothing except the dts software its only through Google that I know it used the Salford library. But the thing is I can process the same image files using the same dts software on a lower spec labtop problem, and until recently I had no problems on the desktop machine.

So I don't think the problem is with the software as such but some conflict or issue on my computer, but I'll investiagte how much memory is used with Task Manager.

Is there a version of salflibc.dll which would provide some debugging output ?

If you don't have the code then the problem is basically one for the supplier. You cannot use SLINK to adjust the memory parameters unless you have the object files (basically the code).

The problem is unlikely to relate to salflibc.dll which in itself does not consume much memory. But there are options that your supplier could explore.

You indicate the program works on your notebook but not the desktop, so the problem could be with the desktop environment.

It may be an avenue you have already looked in to, but I would check task manager for the virtual memory required by each process and then check the virtual memory size allocated in 'system > advanced > performance settings > advanced'

Also check for multiple copies of salflibc.dll on the desktop, which could be another source of the problem. You may have an old copy in the path.

I am disappointed that Wilfried Linder has used this as an opportunity to try and poach one of our customers when he has obviously not even read the details of the post. From the limited amount of information I can glean from the posts it appears that the problem centres around the processing of a background drape image file and not the generation or manipulation of a digital terrain model.

We have been in business since 1985 and pride ourselves on the quality of our technical support. It is unfortunate that this customer has felt it necessary to make comment and seek a resolution through this site, but I can assure him/her that if they contact me personally that I will make sure we follow-up any issues they have with our software.

Without trawling through our customer service system to see what calls we have received about this subject, I can assure everyone who is reading this post that we do follow-up all support calls and when possible resolve any issues which are to do with our software. We even go as far as to help solve issues with operating systems and hardware/drivers. Our reputation is based on the quality of service we provide, but if we have failed on this occasion then I can only apologise and make amends by following it up personally.

Today the customer has had his computer motherboard replaced and the partition on his hard disk removed and reformatted and the Stack Overflow problems have now gone away.

Yes Ive been holding off responding further until this hardware issue that came to light after the original post was resolved. Not really clear what the underlying issue was but at least its now resolved.

Did you replace (or reinstall) the operating system?

My guess is yes, given that he reformatted and repartitioned his hard disk, but who knows?

We do our best to provide technical support, but as this appeared to be a one-off we won't want to spend time working out why it went wrong, given the long list of issues the user had with his computer.
