Is there any way the ftn95 compiler can be persuaded to inline expand the odd small, oft-called function a-la C++ inline ?

No, there is nothing like this in either standard or FTN95 Fortran. The only caveat might be the old (Fortran 66) STATEMENT function which is still available. I do not know how FTN95 handles STATEMENT functions. To find out, I would take a simple example and look at the EXPLIST (see below).

However, FTN95 is fully optimised so the kind of efficiency you are thinking of may be provided for you. You can also use /OPT to add further optimisation. If you are interested, by studying the file produced by /EXPLIST, you can see what optimisations have been done for you.
