Well I guess the first question is obvious ... where does this leave us in the strategy of release of the Personal version ?

I thought we were trying to make sure personal and paid-up versions were equivalent so as to allow the maximum user-participation in testing (especially for %pl) ? Maybe I mis-understood.

Having waited 4-5 months since release 8.2 we now have release 8.3 , which makes me for one now 2 versions sidelined (from v8.1 + last dlls)

On specific points ...
the PRINT_GRAPHICS@ command sounds like an interesting development, however the description of %pl changes is , let's just say, anonymous !

On a general note ...
the Release Announcement Notes are, as usual, just a very brief 1-line summary, can I suggest that all the .enh files should be released on the website too, or via a link on the Release announcement post, so that personal users can have at least visibilty of the details , if not the capability to test. Thanks.

I was amused that the announcement ran foul of the forum posting length limits!

The enhancements in 8.20 and 8.30 don't seem to imply that 8.10 contained many (if any) show-stoppers for most of us. As for new features, %sb looks like a nice one to have, as well as a method fr printing graphics like %pl.

It was the notes on parallel processing that caught my eye. I can make the second example run, but the first example hangs on my machine. This would be a really good topic for an instructional video on YouTube Smile

Ken

I have reported the failure of the first example in the notes on multi-tasking.

Paul,

The file notes_on_parallel_processing.txt appears to be truncated. ParallelExample3.f95 is missing not / included in the file and does not appear to be elsewhere either. Also there is no documentation on new functions such as TaskSynchronise@ etc. Probably an oversight?

Ken

The regression that caused Example1 to fail has now been fixed in salflibc64.dll and I will aim to make new DLLs available shortly. I will also include new notes containing the missing example and details of the new routines.

John, I estimate that to be about 0.6 mega-ohm-farads.

A light year is a unit of distance, not time! :)

On a serious note, is this the first time that the release of the personal edition has skipped a beat? That is, there will be no 8.2 Personal?

Good question mecej4 !
Ay cap't'n, in my time (last 4 years) at least it certainly is the 1st time.
We are boldly going where no ftn95 has gone before Wink
Of concern to me is that Paul has mentioned several times in the last 4 1/2 months since v8.2 came out that beta dll debugging updates would only release once personal was up to 8.2 also ... to avoid out-of-step problems, as I understood it with dll compatabiities ... and then we get v8.3, and evn at least 1 dll release in the pipeline with even more out-of-step situation ... especially for myself concerning the %pl advancements.

mecej4, so you reckon about a week, then?

My guess is not until they can get a release out of the door without someone pointing out what's wrong with it within a jiffy of it becoming downloadable.

I am observing that V8.30.0 is much faster at 32-bit compiling than 8.20.0.
