I'm back.

My client insists that a command to talk to a running program MUST exist.

He says pipe should allow one to start gnuplot and at a later time give it commands.

Does anyone know what he's talking about?

Roger,

There is such a way - as in my first reply, it is windows messaging. Getting your program to send a message is trivial, but you do need to know that GNUplot is listening, and that it will react to a specific message. That requires you to know a lot about GNUplot ...
