| I have just converted to a new PC with an i5 processor and Windows 7 Home OS. Formerly I operated under Window XP Home and an AMD 64 processor. I had to abandon using Plato 3.20 on the new PC – programs would not run – and download the free personal FTN95 compiler under Plato v4.3.0. My Fortran programs now run but run times are ~50% longer; I was expecting much faster speeds. Has anybody else experienced the same problem? |

Yes - under Vista.
Try locating the program with Explorer and setting compatibility mode to XP in the properties. Then run it. If you have a desktop shortcut to the program, its properties can also be set to XP compatibility.

Very occasionally, what you think of as a faster computer turns out - in some respects - to be slower. For example, you might have more cores, but a lower overall clock speed. You might have ended up with a larger - but slower - hard disk.
Another factor might be whatever other software is running. This might be antivirus software, or some fancy networking software. Novel Netware is one of my pet hates.
On the other hand, moving 2 steps in operating system terms may mean that you have to upgrade a whole lot of software, or learn how to fine tune things. Windows XP was current for so long we all forgot ....
