I am puzzled by the numbering system used for Silverfrost releases.
Why wait for 8.50 before releasing fixes to the obvious reported glitches in 8.40? Isn’t the right number for a fixed 8.40 surely 8.41? Doesn’t a jump as far as 8.50 really imply more than just some error fixes, but rather some new features? Is it wise to roll in the new features with error fixes in a completely new version? If the jump is 0.10 each time, what does the second decimal place signify?
And when is the target date for 8.50? Shouldn’t 8.41 come as soon as the reported glitches are fixed?
May I respectfully remind everyone that however spurious and insignificant an error message is, it spreads panic amongst users if it appears?

I noticed that v8.3 was released, then just a week or 10 days later we already had a beta (dlls27), which contains essential stuff in order to follow all the released features of the visual clearwin Pt. 2 video.
I don't quite understand that.
I'm not being critical, because releases can take some time to prepare, it's just that Ididn't understand the release logic.
More confusing still is that the release of the dlls wasn't posted to the same post as the v8.3 release post when it came out.
This all comes back to the thing I've mentioned several times, that all the releases (including dlls could better be managed by copying the links systematically to the main release post, so they're not overlooked by people. _________________ ''Computers (HAL and MARVIN excepted) are incredibly rigid. I should have been more careful in my wording. I meant the next release after 8.40.
As a general rule FTN95 is only released as a full release whereas DLLs are currently available for download almost on demand. This is because of the need to keep different components compatible with each other.
Full releases usually contain significant additions rather than just bug fixes and hence usually have increments of 0.1. I already anticipate significant additions for the next full release. |

Hi Paul,
Those 'shorthands' can confuse the uninitiated.
Does that mean that all the bug fixes are in a DLL? That's mighty convenient!

OK. I'll try to be more careful.
I have not worked out how the bugs are distributed. It's just that fixes within the DLLs tend not to impact on anything else whereas that is not normally the case for FTN95. |
