Thank you for your help. I have found my problem which was that I had removed the file extension altogether somehow, so it is not surprising that I was having problems.

I am not using Plato right now but simply a DOS command line such as
FTN95 %1 /CHECK /UNDEF /INTL /LIST /DEBUG
Where %1 is something like 'routine.for'.

In editing files yesterday I inadvertently removed the include file that held all the declarations and common statements - and, more importantly, the 'implicit none'. So compilation see ... |

The definitions are as below
INTEGER IOS, I, J, II, JJ
CHARACTER VIEW(20, 20, 4)*40
The latter is in a common block and the integers are local variables.
