I am not sure you can use GlobalMemoryStatusEx to see the changes. RETURN_STORAGE@ doesn't necessarily return the memory to the system.

There was a bug in the 64-bit RETURN_GSTORAGE@ not returning memory that is fixed in 8.90.

The easiest thing to try is to delete sdbg.ini. On my machine it is stored at:

C:\Users\Robert\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\sdbg.ini

It sounds like you have fixed-format Fortran files. It is easy to end up with characters in the wrong column with fixed format.

You can see the hex by right clicking the variable and selecting 'memory dump at variable'.
